TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER

SEASHORE

Seagulls glided across a deep blue sky, their cries blending in with the soothing melody of gentle waves lapping against the jagged rocks lining the bottom of a steep cliff. The orange sun blazed proud and hot, its rays reflecting off the waves, making the sea appear like a blanket of shimmering ice-blue jewels.

A lone man in a long white robe walked briskly along the shore, his right hand clutching a sword. Suddenly, he stopped as if listening intently to the surroundings. Out of nowhere, five men, dressed completely in black with black handkerchiefs covering the lower part of their faces, flew out toward the lone man in white. The man in white adroitly executed several flips in the air and vanished from sight. The five black-robed assassins surveyed the surrounding beach in confusion. Suddenly, from the corner of their eyes, they caught a glimpse of the metallic glint of a sword, but before they could react, they felt the fatal sting of blade against their throats. All five assassins collapsed onto the sandy beach, blood gushing from their wounds. Continue reading

IN THE DESERT

Lightning blazed across the dark sky, sending currents of electricity hissing through the silent night. A lone rider, astride his mighty black stallion, galloped across the desert terrain, the horse’s hooves beating the rhythm of a thousand drums. The tall man on horseback, robed in an impressive long yellow garment embroidered with the imperial symbol of the dragon, scanned the horizon, his eyes darting back and forth urgently, hoping to catch a glimpse of his target.

Finally from afar, he spied two figures, a man in black and a woman in white, racing through the evening sky using their lightness kung fu. The man on horseback urged his horse along, and with a hand placed on the stallion’s back for leverage, he pushed himself into the air, executing several flips to pursue the couple ahead of him. As he neared them, he reached out with his hand and attempted to palm the man in black. Continue reading

MORNING
BLUE MOON VILLAGE
FOREST OF SHIFTING ECHOES

Somebody was pummeling her head with rock-hard fists from the inside. The beating was unrelenting and gaining force so that her skull felt like it was going to explode. Surprisingly, the banging inside her head did not irritate her as much as the annoyingly bright yellow light blasting onto her face, magnifying the painful throbbing behind her eyes a million times.

Yan tried to turn her head away from the brightness, but her head felt heavy and disconnected from her shoulders. Finally, unable to bear the brightness any longer, she peeled open her eyes and tried to locate the light source. She blinked stupidly at the radiant sunrays bathing her in a golden pool of warmth and groaned as her headache worsened. Rubbing her eyes, she moaned and tried to remember where she was. Seconds later, she moaned again, this time with embarrassment as last night’s drunken actions flooded back. Her cheeks ignited from the memory of her unladylike behavior, but she didn’t have time to dwell on her embarrassing actions as some loud noise to her left distracted her. Continue reading

BLUE MOON VILLAGE
FOREST OF SHIFTING ECHOES

Sit Chung Nam walked steadily for hours, carrying Yan in his arms. He didn’t want to linger too long in the unfamiliar forests surrounding North Star Town, as already he was ambushed outside Cherry Blossom Inn and had encountered Poison Snake in the forest. Who knew what other complications he would face if he stayed around any longer in this dark, dense forest, where unknown dangers could lurk? Usually, he would arrogantly brush aside any worries of peril. Even if he were to run into Poison Snake again or any other enemies, he was confident he would be able to defeat them. However, with Yan appearing exhausted, he wished to return to Floating Cloud Summit so that she could rest. Furthermore, he didn’t want her to change her mind about returning willingly with him.
